About the school

The School Anderson High School is a comprehensive school offering a wide range of courses to students of all abilities aged 12 to 18. Students join the school at age 12 from the main town of the islands - Lerwick and from the immediate surrounding areas as well as from the most remote island communities of Shetland. At age 16 students transfer from Junior High Schools from all but the northern part of the Shetland mainland. This gives the school a population of approximately 850 students with a staff of full and part time teachers of approximately 80. The Buildings The school has grown at various times from the original building of 1862 shown as centre part of the accompanying photo. Today it is a collection of buildings from 1862,1920's 1960's 1970's and 1990's. It is well staffed, well equipped in terms of furnishings and I C T and facilities but it is inadequate in terms of appropriate access to all areas of the school and in terms of appropriate social areas and areas for stuidents to meet and gather in large numbers. A new building on present site is planned for near future. Learning and Teaching The main activities of any school is learning and teaching.
